Massive App Store Sale on Major iPhone/iPod Gaming...
TouchArcade notified me today that there is a Massive App Store Sale on Major iPhone/iPod Gaming Titles: We’re not sure what has possessed the publishers of dozens of amazing iPhone games to decide that tonight was the night to hold a massive sale — but it’s happened. And you can benefit from it. Crazy, crazy deals, for a limited time. I just picked up a bunch. Most notably: ...

MacArthur Foundation 2010 Fellows →
The MacArthur Foundation’s “Genius grants” are among the most prestigious awards for work in science and culture, with this year’s recipients including a jazz composer, an entomologist, a theater director, and a couple of linguists. Previous award winners include two scientists who have profoundly shaped my research, L Mahadevan who does great math on a wide variety of...

UMBC police blotter: vending machines getting... →
Continuing the UMBC police blotter’s coverage of thefts from vending machines are two more incidents: A UMBC police officer discovered a vending machine that had been pried open by unknown suspect(s). The front panel of a vending machine was found to be pulled forward, and the interior lock bar was damaged and bent in an attempt to break into the machine.

He must speak frankly to the American people about his mammalian background,” Pelmont added. “If not, it’s only a matter of time before people start believing those fringe bloggers who claim the president of the United States is actually an old washing machine.

UMBC police blotter: vending machines getting...
I like reading the police blotter in The Retriever, the UMBC newspaper; it’s typically charming because UMBC is such a safe and pleasant place. Occasionally people get really hurt, but that’s rare. A couple of years ago, there was a crime wave of catalytic converter threat. Now, there’s a vending machine stealing spree, with five entries in this week’s police blotter....

Chrome download bar sucks
The Google Chrome download bar sucks. It opens after any file is downloaded, is visible on all tabs, and the only way to close it is to click the tiny x. There should at least be a keyboard shortcut to close it; an option to auto-hide after the download finishes would be better. This is a noted issue on the Chromium project; if you go here and click the star, that will help developers see that...

Lonely And Rich: American Life As Seen By A... →
From NPR’s Planet Money: We’ve spent a lot of time reporting in Haiti this year. Sebastien Narcisse has been our driver, translator, photographer, and friend during our visits. Sebastien recently completed his first trip to the U.S., and we figured it’s only fair to give him a chance to report on life in the U.S. from a Haitian perspective. Sebastien: I definitely...

Out of Africa, Into Asia - WSJ: How Bono's Edun... →
How Bono’s Edun fashion label has malfunctioned. For example, they wanted to show off African-made clothing. Now, 70% of the clothing is from China. The end had me laughing out loud, with bits including When planning Edun’s upcoming fashion show, Bono initially suggested an elaborate outdoor production with models that appeared to be emerging from the water. Also: Bono had...

Hyperbole and a Half: Allie Gets Drunk →
This is NSFW in the sense that at some jobs, laughing out loud can get you fired. It begins: As an 18-year-old, I had not yet fully grasped the concept of mortality or how my actions could increase or decrease my likelihood of experiencing it. When I was invited to go boat-camping with four guys and a 32-pack of Natural Ice, I was all for it. You might think you have some idea of how...

In Praise of Fast Food →
As quoted by Matthew: So the sunlit past of the culinary Luddites never existed. So their ethos is based not on history but on a fairy tale. So what? Certainly no one would deny that an industrialized food supply has its own problems. Perhaps we should eat more fresh, natural, local, artisanal, slow food. Does it matter if the history is not quite right? It matters quite a bit, I believe....

Beware of Greeks Bearing Bonds →
This is a fun read, but long. I have good feelings about Michael Lewis, from what I’ve heard of The Big Short. But, good golly, does he drag this story out. You can skim it. It’s in two parts, the first, on how the Greek economy got to be so screwed up, the second, on how some monks on Mount Athos got rich by flipping real estate, and by real estate, I mean a lake. His representation...

The REAL ‘Stuff White People Like’ « OkTrends →
OkCupid uses its massive database of human preferences to figure out what is liked most distinctively by different ethnicities. I feel good about atheists and agnostics writing at a higher reading level. Also, Trader Joe’s is a favorite of Pacific Islander women, making me feel more authentic about liking Trader Joe’s.
