The Strange Birth and Long Life of Unix - IEEE Spectrum
You probably use Microsoft Windows on your computer, which is not a unix. However, you use Unix whether you know it or not. You use a unix if you use Linux, and you know that, if you use Linux. You also use a unix and might not notice it, if you have an Android phone or iPhone or if you use Mac OS X. You used a unix just now to read this webpage, because so many of the servers on the internet run on unices. Your router at home probably uses a unix.
This is a lucid account of the early history of The Unix, and is a great example of writing about nerds and nerd culture: it paints nerds as creative experts, not people with tape on their glasses.
