helpless case: Violent Speech (i.e. God, You're All Cowards)
helplesscase has thoughts on response to Palin’s crosshairs map, and the general condemnations of “violent language”.
I’d previously posted on this. In chatting about this, I think helplesscase has a couple of really good points: 1 it’s not clear that Loughner was influenced by Palin’s map 2 people saying we should “dial down” political discourse are “beigeist”. (I really like the term, “beigeist”.)
When I heard about the shooting and then saw Palin’s map, I shuddered a little. I didn’t think, then, that someone was following Sarah Palin’s map as if it were a hit list, but I was put off in the same way that happens when someone tells a joke about cancer around someone who they didn’t know was dying of cancer. My reaction to the Palin crosshairs map was a gut one. I don’t think that makes it wrong. I think she should be allowed, legally, to call for assassinations of anyone she wants; I would then go blog about that or whatever.
